Drake Bay Cost Rica
is one of the most remote and natural settings that tourists will encounter
in Costa Rica. The Drake Bay area has an abundance of wildlife, (particularly
birds), combined with great accomodations and friendly people make this
one of the most spectacular and memorable places to visit.
Drake Bay, (pronounced Bahia Drak Cay by the Costa Ricans and locals) is only accessible by air and water. Although there is a new road, we do not recommend taking a rental car on it as it is seasonal and rains can come at all times of the year here.
You can now fly directly to Drake as the new airstrip is open. This unfortunately eliminates one of the most spectacular boat rides through the mangroves and river delta into the ocean and around a point to Drake Bay. See "Getting to Drake" for more information. This is truly an outdoor lover's paradise. Hiking, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, and sunbathing are just some of the many outdoor activities here. If you are looking for shopping, night life, and luxury, this is definately not the place. One small store (pulperia) and a small disco that is open on Saturday nights (that may remind you more of a high school dance than a disco) are the total sum of shopping and night life. However, if you are looking for natural beauty, wilderness rain forest, lots of wildlife, friendly people, and a place to get away from it all then we highly recommend Drake as your getaway vacation destination. The resorts here all provide meals so there isn't much in terms of restaurants
either. Bring sunblock, first aid supplies, medication, and anything else
you may need while you are here as the pulperia is not that well stocked.

-Two Costa Rican Airlines service the route between San Jose and Palmar Norte:
1. Travel Air-has daily service from San Jose to Palmar Norte. The departure times vary so it is good to make reservations and plans ahead of time. The cost of a round trip ticket is $140 and one way is $85. *Note-baggage is limited to 25lbs per person.
2. Sansa-also has daily service, however is a little less reliable. More advanced planning is strongly recommended. The cost of a round trip ticket is $115, one way is $58, and children fly for 1/2 price. *Note-baggage is limited to 25 lbs per person.
-BY LAND(cheaper, incredible scenery, but much more time)
-Tracopa Bus -can also be taken to Palmar Norte. The bus station is located in downtown San Jose and can be reached by asking any taxi driver to take you to the "Tracopa". A round trip bus ticket will cost $9. However, the bus ride takes an average of 5 1/2 hours to reach Palmar Norte. If you have the time, the road winds through the central highlands of Costa Rica and the scenery from the bus window can be an extremely beautiful !
-Taxi -A taxi can also be taken. The taxi ride will cost $150 one way for up to 4 people and will also take you 5 1/2 hours.
-Rental Car -Of course you can take a rental car to all the way to Sierpe, and the convenience of not having to wait for planes or buses is appealing to some. However, you must remember that although there is a rough road, we do not recommend driving to Drake Bay so the days you spend at the Jinetes de Osa will be money wasted on the rental.
3. From Palmar Norte to Sierpe
-Taxi -are usually available from the airport or from the bus stop in Palmar during anytime for the day. A trip to Sierpe will cost you $17 one way for up to 4 people.
-Bus -leaves Palmar 4 times a day. Departure times vary. The trip will cost $1 one way.
4. From Sierpe to Drake Bay and Jinetes de Osa/Costa Rica Adventure Divers
-There is no established boat service from Sierpe to Drake Bay, however boats leave the docks on the Sierpe River several times a day for Drake Bay and will be more than happy to give you a ride for a reasonable fee. You can find a boat bringing food, supplies, or other people to Drake Bay (which you almost always can) it will cost about $15 per person one way.
**Note-because there is no established boat service to Drake Bay the above prices should serve as a guideline only. The price you pay could be more or less depending on your bargaining ability and the availability of boats.
